The parentage of brothers Fielding, Reuben and Lewis Sudduth has eluded generations of researchers. The gravestone of Lewis Sudduth says that he was born in Culpeper Co. VA, so it has been assumed that Fielding was born there as well. The birthdates for Fielding and his children are from his family bible (in 1971 it was in the possession of Mrs. J.F. Sudduth of rural Lyman SC). The birth date for Rachel is from her mother's family bible (disposition unknown, however a transcript of the bible's entries has survived).
Fielding resided near Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Greenville County, SC. The following tradition was told to Brent Holcomb by Furman Sudduth, son of James McMakin Sudduth and great grandson of Fielding Sudduth:
"Fielding Sudduth repaired shoes. One evening he was repairing some shoes and his wife was roasting potatos in the fireplace. She removed one from the fire for herself and asked him if he wanted one. He said that he would have one as soon as he finished the shoe he was working on. He finished the shoe and fell over dead."
