Rosa Mary Kelly, 93, of rural LeRoy, Kansas, passed away Thursday evening, March 2, 2017, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.

Rosa was born June 1, 1923, east of Burlington, the daughter of Jacob and Katherine (Hegwald) Kniss.

When she was young the family moved to Nebraska to work in the sugar beets fields later returning to Burlington and settling on a farm in the Cola Hill neighborhood southwest of Burlington.

On January 9, 1944, she and Carl Glen Kelly were married at the Christian Church Parsonage in Burlington. In 1945 she and Glen purchased their farm south of Burlington where they would spend the rest of their married life.

Rosa was a farm wife and mother, typical of her era. She was hard working and thrifty. She helped her husband with the farm work, raised different types of fowl, raised a big garden, and cared for her home and family. She always had enough food and produce to take care of her family's needs and often would sell the extra she had. She was proud to have instilled in her three children her morals, ethics, and her value of hard work.

In earlier years Rosa was a member of the Crotty Methodist Church, where she was active in the quilting club, later transferring her membership to the United Methodist Church in Burlington.

Her husband, Glen, preceded her in death on February 29, 2012, following sixty-eight years of marriage. Rosa remained at the farm until April 1, 2013, when became a resident of the Life Care Center in Burlington. She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Betty Kelly; her brother, Clarence Kniss; and her sister, Amelia Mudge.

She leaves her children, Janice Ashbaugh and husband Les, Carl Kelly, Topeka, KS, and Mary Mulryan and husband Pat, Overbrook, KS; six grandchildren, Tina Hamilton and husband Lloyd, Kimberly DeWeese and husband Tim, Christopher Mulryan, Eric Ashbaugh and wife Deanna, Micheal Kelly and wife Mandy, and Shawn Kelly and wife Darla; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 10, 2017, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery.
