Landon Carter, son of Robert "King" Carter, left his 2,823 acre tract, bordering on Young's Branch, and his share of the Great Bull Run Tract to be equally divided between his sons, Landon (1738-1801) and John (1739-1789). Between 1760 and 1770, before the land was divided, Landon built "Pittsylvania" and John built "Sudley" to the northward.
During the War between the States, Pittsylvania was still in the ownership of Carters. The house, a large frame structure painted the color of dark brick, was called "the brown house" by wounded soldiers, who were brought here for treatment. In the Second Battle of Manassas, Pittsylvania witnessed on August 30, 1862, the decisive defeat of the Federal forces. Therefore, the Union troops who burned the house soon afterwards must have taken keen delight in the conflagration.

SONS: Wormeley Carter and John Fauntleroy Carter all my land in Pr. Wm. and in Loudoun which I am entitled under will of my father. Wormeley land in Pr. Wm. and John, Loudoun land and it being my intention that the 2 estates so divided should be equal in value and should either estate be adjudged more valuable then the other the largest estate should pay to the other so much money as will make division equal.
Sons: Moore Fauntleroy Carter and Charles Landon Carter all my lands in Fauquier Co. which I possessed under will of my father to be divided between them agreeable to boundaries in a deed of conveyance recorded in Co. of Fauquier.
Sons: Wormeley, John F., Moore F. and Charles L. Carter all slaves, stock and plantation utensils divided between them.
Daughters: Elizabeth, Margaret and Judith sum of 1,000 Ls each to be pd. them by 4 sons at the expiration of 5 years from my dec. and for support of each of sd. daus. sum of 40 lbs. the first March in each year until sd. sum of 1,000 lbs is pd.
Sons: Wormeley and John to pay for the first 2 years.
Daughters: Elizabeth, Margaret and Judith my dwelling house with yard and garden to contain 10 a. of land and slaves: Betty, Sukey, Charlotte, Caty, Minah, Jenny, Judah, Vincent, carriage and etc. as long as they remain single and when my will is settled all property divided among my 4 sons.
Daughters: Slaves: Peter, Sukey his wife with all their children, also negro Jenny.
