John Hunter Urquhart, Jr., 87, of Roanoke, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2007. Mr. Urquhart was a graduate of Jefferson High School. He retired in 1981 from Norfolk and Western Railroad as manager of Income Tax and had more than 40 years of service. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps in World War II in the Pacific Theater, and in the Korean Conflict. John was a member of the First Marine Division during World War II and participated in the Guadalcanal Campaign and other island campaigns. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Beta Tau Fraternity, and the Roanoke Elks Lodge. John enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and wonderful neighbors. John also enjoyed gardening in his yard.
He was born on November 19, 1919 in Roanoke. John was the son of John Hunter Urquhart, Sr., and Iraminta Booker Urquhart. He was preceded in death by an infant son, John Hunter Urquhart III; and two sisters, Betty Terrell and Mildred Oakey. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Corinne (Bette) Harvey Urquhart; his daughter, Carolyn Nelson and husband, Russell: his son, John Hewitt Urquhart and wife, Debra, all of Roanoke; and his sister, Margaret Bromfield of Stamford, Connecticut. He is also survived by grandchildren, Laurie Childress of Richmond, Elizabeth Kolnok of Roanoke, Michael Nelson of Bridgewater, Angela Smith, and Haille Urquhart of Roanoke. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
