obituary in The Merced Sun-Star, Merced, California:
Henrik "Rik" Strombotne was born in El Paso, Texas, on November 15, 1922 and grew up in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Rik served our country in World War II as a Navy fighter pilot off The USS Yorktown from 1942 until 1945.
He studied agriculture at the College of Wyoming and also attended Law School at UCLA. But Rik's passion, as many of you know, was always farming and ranching, so he went on to own his own ranch, farming many crops such as sugar beets, corn, wheat, and alfalfa, with his main crop being cotton. Rik also raised beef cattle, farming in Kerman and Merced for many years and provided food for our country with a work ethic unlike any other.
When Rik stopped ranching, he moved onto real estate until he finally retired and moved to San Luis Obispo with his wife to be near their daughters. Rik enjoyed his retirement on the Central Coast until his passing on July 23, 2009. He lived life to its fullest and enjoyed each moment.
He is survived by his wife Karen; sons Clinton Strombotne and wife Dede, and Mark Strombotne and wife Victoria; stepdaughters Carmen and Jamie Bodoh; grandchildren Alexandra Popplewell, Cristina Strombotne, Kiersten Strombotne, Spencer Strombotne; and sister Elsa Jaeger.
There will be a celebration of his life at 1:00 pm, Sunday, November 15, 2009 in San Luis Obispo. Those wishing to attend may call Wheeler-Smith Mortuary at 805-543-6871 for the location.
