Paul Ehinger
June 12, 1923 - February 27, 2017

Paul Ehinger, 93, passed away on February 27, 2017. Born June 12, 1923 in Portland, OR he was the son of George and Ruth Francis Ehinger, and later a stepson of Aline Ehinger.

Following the death of his mother, the family moved to Dover, Delaware, where Paul spent his childhood. He began a lifelong association with the Boy Scouts, becoming an Eagle Scout in his early years. He graduated from Dover High School in 1941 and the Mt. Hermon School in 1942, after which he enrolled at the University of Michigan.

While at Michigan, Paul enlisted in the Marine Corps and spent his time at college in uniform. There, he met his future wife, MaryEllen Imbus. He graduated with a degree in forestry in 1945. Following his graduation, he went to Camp Lejeune where he completed his Marine training and received his commission as a lieutenant.

On January 3, 1948, Paul and MaryEllen married and moved back to Oregon where he began his career as a forester. In the ensuing years, the couple had four children - Paul Jr., Suzanne, Diane and David. In 1949, Paul went to work for the Edward Hines Lumber Company in Westfir, however his career was interrupted in 1951, when the Marines recalled him to active duty during the Korean War.

Paul returned to Westfir in mid-1952 to continue with his work with Hines, during which he moved from Forest Engineer to Senior Vice President of the company. While at Hines, he served in a variety of lumber industry positions, including President of the Oregon Logging Conference and of the American Plywood Association. He also served on many committees, which allowed him to meet both President Gerald Ford and President Jimmy Carter as a representative of the lumber industry.

In 1983, Paul left Hines and established his own consulting firm, Paul F. Ehinger and Associates, where he was best known for his mill closure reports, which tracked the mills in the Northwest. He was frequently used as an expert witness in trials related to timber and forestry business issues. He closed his business in 2014 at the age of 90.

Paul's wife, MaryEllen, daughter Diane and brother George preceded him in death.

He is survived by sons David (Susan) and Paul (Marina), daughter Suzanne Gove, his brothers Robert and Nelson, his close friend Janet McCracken, 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Paul will be laid to rest at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Eugene, OR, beside his wife and daughter. A celebration of his life will be held later. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Oregon Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
