My great grandfather was very upset after the death of his mother Meta (her iron blew up) and ran off to be a cowboy at the King ranch. According to family legend he lived in a tree at the south of the ranch. He professed to be a 'free-thinker'. He also was a concert violinist. In addition he was good friends with many cowboys of the age including J Frank Dobie who visited from time to time (according to my mother Charmayne who has since passed). At some point he worked in Mexico acquiring animals for zoos (I think I have a few boxes left over from the shipping of live animals still in my possesion) Later he settled down and worked as a bookeeper for HD Gruene. I dont know how many years he did this work but after he married Lydia Rohde he got a farm I think in comfort? which he traded for some ranch land just west of New Braunfels in the community of Mission Valley where he raised cattle on about 360 acres of rocky land. He also planted pumpkins on a field behind the house. Later in life he was bit by a rattlesnake while hunting in a tree and progressively became uncommunicative due to the incident.
