Elsie Louise (Ulm) Darst

Elsie Louise Ulm Darst, a sweet, loving lady of 87, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007. She was born in New Orleans & grew up in Orange, Texas as the eldest of 11 children. She was valedictorian of her high school and attended Lamar College for 2 years as a straight-A pre-med student. She left Lamar to work at the Creosote plant in Orange. She met her husband Tom Darst while singing in St. Mary's Church choir in Orange and married him in 1944. Together they had 5 sons and 5 daughters. Elsie quietly but passionately loved her God, her family & life. Beginning in 1954 she worked hand in hand with Tom to start and run Forest Lawn Cemetery where she worked as the bookkeeper & office manager until a few years ago. She always encouraged her children to be the best people they could be and she modeled that in every aspect of her life. She loved her husband and each of her children completely and unconditionally. She was a proud Catholic Daughter & member of the Altar Society & choir at church, an artist with a sewing machine making everything from shirts for the boys to prom dresses for the girls, an amazing cook, and a sensitive friend and listener. To ensure that their ten children would have a Catholic education, she and Tom bought a house one block from Our Lady of Mt Carmel Elementary and High School. Elsie Darst was preceded in death by her daughter Theresa and her grandson Drew. She is survived by her dear husband Tom, and her children and their spouses: Mary Anne Speck (Paul), Elsie Biron (Beau), Tom, Jr. (Sandy), Jim (Mary), John (Anne), Paul (Nancy), Joe, Miriam Franke (Bob), and Loretta Pressnall; and her 18 grandchildren and her 16 great-grandchildren, 8 of her siblings and many friends. The first visitation will be Tuesday, 2-4:00 PM at the chapel at St. Dominic Village, 2401 E. Holcombe Blvd, Houston. The second visitation will be Wednesday, 1-8:00 PM, at Settegast Kopf Funeral Home at 3320 Kirby Dr. where the rosary and memorial service will begin at 6:30. The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 AM, Thursday St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6800 Buffalo Speedway. Burial will follow at the mausoleum in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 8701 Almeda-Genoa Road. The Elsie Darst Memorial Scholarship Fund has been set up at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School, 6703 Whitefriars, Houston,TX.
