Listed as "Geriah Lee Marcum" in "MRS JAB" by Wanda Browning Falk. Her first name has been spelled as both Geriah and Jeriah - Jeriah consistently in census records and her death certificate. Her Granddaughter's name, "Sybil Jeriah Slack Munroe", used the Jeriah spelling.
Her middle and/or maiden name as been recorded as: Lee, Marcum, and Turk.

Originally from Virginia (per census records), she was married to Francis Marion McCarty March 25, 1858 in Webster County, Missouri. This union produced at least six children - the one known to live to adulthood per census records is Thomas A. McCarty. They moved with her in-laws to Texas before the Civil War and spent time around Fort Bellnap, Fort Cooper, Fort Davis, and Fort Griffin. They were among the very early settlers of this area.

In 1868, Francis was shot and killed by his brother-in-law in a dispute of a calf near Fort Griffin, Texas. Jeriah later married George Henry York in the barracks of Fort Griffin on Aug. 30, 1870. The 1870 Census - dated Nov, 1870 - shows George, Jeriah, and his step children living on the bank of the Clear Fork of the Brazos River east of Fort Griffin. Subsequent census show that they lived on and farmed a plot of land on the banks of the Clear Fork in North Western Stephens County near the Crystal Falls community for over 30 years - likely the same plot of land they were on at the time of the 1870 census. The Albany News infrequently reported George's crops to be wheat and pecans (this does not exclude others). George and Jeriah had four children that we know of from the Census' and family records - twins Mercy and Mattie, Abiezer, and Rebecca.

In April of 1902, they moved to Lawrence, Texas and George passed away in 1905. Jeriah then lived with her son, Abizer York, in Wheeler, Texas until she passed away in 1927. Kaufman County records and her obituary indicate that he is buried here.

Additional note: Try as I may, I have been unable to determine Jeriah's origins other than Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, or Georgia (as stated in the US Census', and other records). Her maiden name is given as "Turk" on two of her children's death certificates. Her own death certificate doesn't give a maiden name but lists her father's name as Jack, and her mother's name as Margret. If her maiden name was indeed Turk, then the Marcum/Lee names may be from a marriage prior to her marriage to McCarty.
