George L. Payne was born in Chariton County, Mo., June 7, 1866, and passed away at his home Oct. 27, 1939, at the age of 73 years, four months and 20 days. He was united in marriage to Laura C. Wall on March 22, 1892, and to this union were born four children, Loy of Fresno, Calif., Roy of Napa, Calif., Orval of Pea Ridge, Ark., and Mrs. Edna Shipman of the home. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren. He united with the Church of Christ about 25 years ago and departed this life a faithful Christian. He has been a longtime resident of Christian County and will missed by a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at the residence Sunday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. by Brother Butler, with burial in the Sparta Cemetery under direction of the Sparta Undertaking Co., Rathbun & Chaffin. (George was on his way to Sparta with team of horses and wagon, when he was struck by an automobile pulling out from a side road, the accident left him badly injured, causing him to loose his left arm and breaking several ribs. His son, Orval & family retuned from Pea Ridge, Ark. to tend to the farm while he recovered until he was able to regain his health. He continued to farm after this until his death.)
