OBITUARY:

On Friday, May 23rd, Wilma Marie Johnson flew with angels into the presence of her Lord and those precious loved ones waiting and watching for her. She passed away peacefully in her home with family by her side.

Wilma was born the youngest of four children to Herbert and Esther (VanHorn) Betz, June 6, 1923, in Champion, Nebraska.

Her childhood memories were of an early life in a dirt floor, sod house, the love of her mother, playing with paper dolls and singing while herding milk cows with her sister Helen.

Wilma met her sweetheart for life when Holger Johnson drove down her dusty country road to deliver mail. They married July 15th, 1941, nine months before Holger was shipped over seas for three years in the service of our country.

During Holger's time away, Wilma was lovingly supported by her mother and father-in-law, Christ and Marie Johnson and her grandmother, Van Horn.

She later joined her sister, Helen Walker's family of war brides in California. These special women lived, and worked together while their spouses were away at war.

Wilma took a job in a local bakery where she developed her baking skills and creative talent for decorating cakes. Over the years, Wilma decorated many wedding cakes for brides in her community and it was never uncommon for local farmers, young and old, to stop by the Johnson home for coffee, a freshly baked cinnamon roll or cookie. Halloween was a favorite time for neighborhood families to receive a warm donut at Wilma's door. Holger and Wilma began their life together in Anton, Colorado, soon after Holger returned from the service.

In 1954, with three small daughters and a one bedroom travel trailer they moved to what would become their permanent home in Washington. Over the next several years, they pioneered a homestead on units 88 and 45 just north of Eltopia. Seven years later another daughter arrived and their family was complete when their only son was born in 1963.

Wilma spent many days by her husband's side clearing sagebrush and developing the family farm. She was a phenomenal farm wife, planting, working and harvesting the fields beside her husband, keeping a clean as possible home and a desert garden.

Wilma was a "rural soccer mom" supporting her children's interest in scouting, 4-H, music, sports and church.

In December of 1966, Holger and Wilma lost their daughter, Nadine in a tragic accident. Although the loss of this child seemed unbearable, with the unending support of her close neighbors Wilma showed amazing strength.

She began working as an elementary cook for the North Franklin School District in September of 1973. She is remembered fondly by students, teachers and parents for her delicious meals and loving smile.

Wilma endured another crisis when Holger suffered a brain aneurysm in 1976. Wilma became an advocate for her husband's life, staying by his side through dark hours and many years of rehabilitation.

She took responsibility for management of the farm and continued to support her children's needs. God perfected Wilma's greatest spiritual gift, that of a servant's heart, as she unconditionally gave herself to the purpose of caring for Holger through the remainder of her life.

In 2003, Holger and Wilma joined a new community at Charbonneau Retirement Center in Kennewick, where Wilma finally retired from cooking and enjoyed a very busy social life. Her thoughtfulness drew others to her providing her with deep, lasting friendships that immensely enriched her life.

Wilma is known for her deep faith, constant prayer life and devotion to family and friends. In her last days, God gave her the time to tell those she loved, how much they meant to her. It is amazing, the number of people this quiet, gentle woman touched throughout her life. We cherish every moment spent in her sweet presence.

She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Herbert and Esther Betz; brother, Gerald; sisters, Gladys and Helen; and her daughter, Nadine.

She is survived by her husband, Holger and her children, Arlene and Frank (Ochoa), Esther and Ken (Bussell), Gay and Ed (Berndt) and Edward and Terry Johnson. She lives on in the hearts and lives of her 10 grandchildren, their spouses and her seven great-grandchildren.

She leaves a legacy of loving memories, humorous stories, and life lessons for the linage of children that will follow.

Memorial services will be held Friday, May 30th, at 2 p.m., at Kennewick Nazarene Church, 2402 S. Union St.
