Michael A. Berken, 41, of Seville, died Monday, Aug. 18, 1997, at his home after a courageous battle with Leukemia, following complications of a bone marrow transplant. He was surrounded by his loving family and dear friends.
He was born in Brunswick and had been a Medina County resident for 26 years. He was a member of Our Lady Help of Christians - Jesus Emmanuel Community, Seville, Over the Hill Track Club and he coached Medina Home School Track Club. He was an avid pole vaulter in local and national meets. Mr. Berken enjoyed hunting for mushrooms. He had a special interest in the church's social concerns, was a naturalist and had a lifelong interest in political and social issues that contributed to peace and justice. He was a music lover, particularly folk music of the British Isles.
He had worked as a supervisor for Dynometer Laboratory in Cleveland and Engine Plant 2, Ford Motor Co..
Mr. Berken is survived by his wife, Rhonda Berken (nee Beckler) of Seville; children, Alison Michele, Nicholas Ronald, Heidemarie, Andrew Michael, Hannelore and Alec Christian, all of Seville; mother, Ruth Berken of Brunswick; sisters, Christina Berken of Akron and Suzanne Berken of Medina; brother, Eric Berken of Brunswick; mother- and father-in-law, Margaret and Ronald Beckler of Brunswick; sister-in-law Lisa Pettry (Tim); nieces, Sara and Nina; nephews, Colin, Matthew and Noah; and grandmother-in-law, May Beckler.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Jesus Emmanuel Community, 60 High St., Seville. The Rev. Michael Wittman will officiate.
Burial: Mound Hill Cemetery, Seville.
Visiting hours: 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Waite & Son Funeral Homes, Medina Chapel, 765 N. Court St.
