FRIENDS ARE BAFFLED IN A FRENZIED SEARCH FOR EDWARD H. MOON

CLOTHES ON BOAT,BUT RICHMONDER FAILS TO APPEAR
Was"Supposed" to Reach Norfolk, Yesterday on Steamer Jefferson.

HOTEL IN NEW YORK SAYS HE WAS THERE

Relatives Hear No Word as Police,Try to Solve the Mystery

Adding to the confusion existing in connection with the reported disappearance of Edward H. Moon,Richmond broker, comes the report from the Vanderbilt Hotel, this morning at 3 o'clock, that Mr. Moon checked out of the hotel last Sunday afternoon.
Last night at 11:30 o'clock it wasn't stated positively at the Vanderbilt that Mr. Moon checked out Tuesday about 3 o'clock. The clerk who gave the information said, he was sorry, but, that there had been a misunderstanding.
Is Edward H. Moon, broker, whose home is at 1801 Grove Avenue, in New York City, on the way Richmond, or has he met with foul play.
That is the question , his relatives and friends are asking, and pending an answer that can be relied upon, are in a state of intense anxiety and suspense. He was in New York, last Sunday and was expected in Richmond last night. He did not arrive and no word has beeen recieved here from him.
Reports from Norfolk, that his coat and vest and his suitcase were found in a state room on the Old Dominion steamer, Jefferson, said to have been engaged by him ,early Monday, and his failure to leave the boat at Norfolk, yesterday, lent to the report that he was lost at sea.
MAY BE IN NEW YORK
Reports from New York, that he was seen there yesterday afternoon, tend to discredit the first reports, that he was a passenger on the Jefferson. And New York reports are from a source that is regarded as reliable.
All of this tends to confuse the situation. There is no apparent reason why Mr. Moon should have metwith foul play and the occupant of the stateroom, that in which Mr. Moon is supposed to have slept, declares there was only one person in that room and that there was no commotion of any kind at any time. Norfolk detectives who have been at work on the case since yesterday at noon, are unable to throw any light on the matter.
Mr. Moon has hundreds of friends in Richmond and that they were deeply concerned as to his whereabouts, was shown by the number of telephone calls, that came in to the Times Dispatch office yesterday afternoon and last night.
Almost every five minutes some call would come in, asking if anything had been heard from Mr. Moon. Many friens called in person at the home.

and Fell Overboard

Norfolk,Va., Aug. 30- Norfolk police tonight had accepted the theory that Edward H. Moon, broker of Richmon, fell overboard, sometime Monday night from the Old Dominion steamship, Jefferson while on the way from New York to Norfolk.
Moon was missing from the New Jefferson, when she was docked in Norfolk, Tuesday morning, although his two bags, his coat, vest, socks, necktie, watch and money were still in stateroom he occupied with Willaim Coan of Lexington,Va., a professor at Washington and Lee university.
Friends of Mr. Moon have asked the aid of Senator Claude Swanson, in Washington, in the effort to have coastguard cutters and other craft search along the route of the Jefferson at about where Mr. Moon is believed to have fallen overboard for some trace of the body.
The theory that he fell overboard is strengthened, the police said, by the story of Professor Coan, who said that Monday night Moon was slightly seasick and expressed great (?), that he would become seriously ill. At 11 o'clock when he went to sleep. Mr. Coan told authorities in Richmond today. Moon was lying in his bunk in trousers and underwear.
