NURSE IN WAR DIED IN CITY AT AGE OF 78

MISS OTHILIA MERTES COAUTHOR OF MEDICAL RESEARCH STUDY

Miss Othilia T. Mertes, 78, of 73 Fourth St., died at 10:30 p.m. Monday at St. Agnes Hospital following a lingering illness.

Born in 1887, in Dotyville, she was the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Buese Mertes. Miss Mertes attended the Catholic School in Dotyville, and St. Mary’s Hospital, Milwaukee, being graduated with an R N degree. She did private nursing and industrial nursing at the A. O. Smith Corp in Milwaukee.

In 1930 she became affiliated with the U. S. Public Health Service and was assigned to the U. S. Marine Hospitals in California, Kentucky, Texas, New York and Maine. In 1945, as head nurse, she was commissioned an officer on active duty in the armed services and was stationed in Portland, Me., until her honorable discharge in 1949.

During this time she was a member of the board of the U. S. Civil Service Examiners and coauthor of a medical research study, results of which were published in the American Journal of nursing.

Following retirement she moved to the city and was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Altar and Rosary Society, Third Order of St. Francis Apostolate of the Suffering, Jesuit Seminary Guild, American Nurses Association, Wisconsin State Nurses Association, St. Mary’s Nurses Alumnae Association and St. Vincent de Paul Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sisters, Rose, city, and Evelyn of Manitowoc. She was related to Mrs. Frank Mertes and Fred J. Leonard of the city. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Zacherl Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 8:45 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home and 9:15 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Henry G. Riordan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Funeral services for Miss Othilia T. Mertes, who died Monday, were held at 8:45 a.m. today at the Zacherl Funeral Home and 9:15 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Rt. Rev. Msgr. Henry G. Riordan officiating.

Members of the Altar and Rosary Society and the Third Order of St. Francis attended the service in a body. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Pallbearers, nephews of the deceased, included Brian Seibel, Edward Porn, George Leonard, Charles Leonard, Anthony Leonard Sr. and Anthony Leonard Jr.
