Alexander Bernard Heim was born in Goebel-Saratov, Russia. At the age of 2 years his family came to America and settled in Topeka, Kansas. At the age of 15 Alex worked as a messenger boy for Western Union. In 1920 the Heim family moved to California. On 21 May 1924 Alex married Lydia Christine Fisher. Together they raised 9 children.
