Tanner Lloyd Hayden was the fifth child of George Henry and Emma Dee Carruth Hayden. The family lived at Old Union in Drew County, Arkansas. He had ten siblings - Wilbur, Maggie, Lois, Henry, Bruin, Ivaree, Emma Dean, Carlyn, Delbert, and Lamar. Tanner's given name was a family surname passed down through his paternal grandmother's (Margaret "Maggie" Caldwell Hayden) line. Margaret's grandfather, Matthew Tanner Hayden, is buried in Lee Cemetery in Jefferson County, AR, memorial #31000046.

Tanner Hayden married first wife, Dorma Lee Ray, 19 July 1941, who preceded him in death in 1965. They had two daughters, Shirley and Linda. The family lived in Pine Bluff, AR, where he was a barber by profession. Dorma is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Dortha F. Hayden (d.1995) is buried beside Tanner and is presumed by this biographer to have been his widow.

Tanner Hayden also served in the Army during World War II, enlisting at Shreveport, LA, on 2 October 1942.
