Obituary provided by Find a Grave member Nancy Zeltinger Austin #47321269

Helen passed away April 11, 2017 at age 97. She is now with our Lord Jesus Christ and her loving husband, Luther McHattie.

Helen was the 5th of 15 children born to Sophie and Christian Albrecht. Helen was born November 10, 1919 in Temvik, North Dakota. Along with her parents and siblings, Helen worked the family dairy farm and eventually attended North Dakota State University. While attending NDSU she met James Luther McHattie and the two married July 3, 1941 before Luther left to fight in World War II.

Luther was a Master Sargent leading his men in the Pacific going from island to island, beach to beach. When Luther returned with a purple heart, he was only 1 of 2 that returned from his unit. During this time, Helen began her career teaching in a one room school house. Helen finished her career as an elementary teacher at Wilburton Elementary in Bellevue, WA where she was recognized by her peers and OSPI as one the top reading specialist in the state.

Helen and Luther were also devoted Christians, contributing to multiple ministries found at Rose Hill Presbyterian Church in Kirkland, and Longview Community Church. Helen and Luther had 2 sons, Ron and Rod. Ron married Jama Taylor and they had 2 children, Michal and Matt. Ron is a Pastor and Jama was also a teacher. Rod married Jami Wegeleben and they had 2 children, Kelli and Keri. Helen also has 4 great grandchildren – Teagan, Jesse, Raija and Anon. Our entire family will miss Mom. She loved Luther, her family, the greater Albrecht family of 259 descendents, her church families and the children she taught as an elementary teacher.

The McHattie family will gather at Sunset Hills Memorial Park to remember Helen. Our family would like to express appreciation to friends, both in Longview and Kirkland for being a part of Helen’s life. Helen lived a long and fulfilling life.
