Mrs. Joseph Sudbeck, Hartington, Dies Following Heart Attack
Funeral Held Tuesday
Husband and Seven Children Survive--Born at Village of St. Helena
Mrs. Joseph Sudbeck of Hartington, pioneer resident of Cedar county, succumbed at her home at 7:30 o'clock Sunday morning following a sudden heart attack. The late Mrs. Sudbeck had been in failing heatlh the past three weeks but her condition was not considered serious. She suffered the heart attack at 6:30 o'clock.
Born at St. Helena.
Elizabeth Kohls Sudbeck, a life-time resident of Cedar county, was born at St. Helena January 6, 1862, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Kohls. She received her education in the rural village school at St. Helena and grew to young womanhood in that community.
Fifty years ago, February 26, 1884, Miss Elizabeth Kohls and Joseph Sudbeck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Sudbeck, first pioneers of the Bow Valley community, were united in marriage. The ceremony occurred at the Catholic church at Bow Valley, the marriage lines being read by Rev. Fr. Uhing.
In observance of the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Sudbeck, an elaborate all-day celebration was held at Bow Valley at the home of their son, Victor Sudbeck, February 6.
After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Sudbeck commenced housekeeping on the Sudbeck farm at Bow Valley. Then years ago, they retired from farm life and moved into Hartington where they purchased and established a home.
Devout Christian
The late Mrs. Sudbeck was a devout member of the Catholic church during her entire lifetime. She was an active member of the Mothers Sodality, an organization of the Holy Trinity Church.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Sudbeck, of Hartington; four sons, Bernard J.; Will and Victor Sudbeck, all of Bow Valley, and Isadore Sudbeck of Laurel; and three daughters, Rosa, Mrs. Louis Arens of near Hartington, Emma, Mrs. Frank Wieseler of Crofton, and Martha, Mrs. Henry Langferman of Wynot.
Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Anna Handorff of Minnesota; one brother, Louis Kohls of Texas; and a large number of grandchildren.
Three children preceded Mrs. Sudbeck in death. They were Stephen who died when he was 10 years old; Martin who died in infancy; and Josephine who succumbed in 1922.
Funeral Tuesday
Funeral services were conducted at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning at the Holy Trinity Church in Hartington. Requeim high mass was read by the pastor, Rev. B. H. Lordemann, Interment was made in the Box Valley Catholic cemetery.
Active pallbearers were August Suing, Louis Burbach, Jake Backman, Henry Happe, Otto Wiley and J. C. Roskopf.
The honorary pallbearers were Mrs. Joseph Bange, Mrs. J. C. Roskopf, Mrs. Frank Keiter, Mrs. A. M. Hirschman, Mrs. Peter Lauer and Mrs. John Roth.
