WINSTON-SALEM Mr. Howard Jackson Runnion Jr., 74, died Friday April 15, 2005 at the Fitzgerald Health Center in Winston-Salem.

A family memorial service will be held at Vogler and Sons Main Street Chapel.

He was born May 23, 1930 in Hot Springs, N.C. to Blanche Elam and Howard Jackson Runnion Sr. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and of the Wharton Schools Institute of Investment Banking. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he joined Wachovia Bank in 1952 as a management trainee. He served in the Trust Investment Department until 1962 when he became manager of the banks investment portfolio. He was elected senior vice president and named manager of the Bond and Investments Department in 1967. He was well known among bankers and Treasury and Federal Reserve officials. In the early 1970s he pioneered the development of a sophisticated and efficient model for asset-liability management. He became executive vice president and head of Financial Management Division in 1977. In 1980 he developed the variable rate mortgage. He retired from Wachovia as vice chairman of the board of directors and chief financial officer in 1990 with 38 years of service. He was a founding director of the Public Securities Association and was a member and former chairman of its Government and Federal Agencies Securities Committee, which advises the Secretary of the Treasury on financing the public debt, which is currently known as the Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee of the Bond Market Association.

He was trustee and chairman of the board of College Foundation, Inc. of North Carolina, former chairman of the board of the North Carolina Municipal Council, Inc, and former member of the Reserve City Bankers Association. He served as director of the following companies: Wachovia Corporation, Wachovia Bank & Trust Company, Security First Network Bank, Recognition Equipment, Inc., Cardinal Bancshares, Depository Trust Company, and Atlantic Capital Management.

He served on the board of Forsyth Country Club and was a member of Roaring Gap Club. He had a rewarding second career as an insurance broker, forming an affiliation with his friends Ken Miller and Bob Long of Long Miller & Associates. He remained active serving on the Board of Trustees of Senior Services, Inc., Hospice, and S1 Corporation.

His wife of 52 years, Betty Ann Bishop Runnion; two daughters, Debbie Sizemore and husband Bucky of Winston-Salem, and Jill Glenn of Cornelius,; one sister, Margaret Anne Felkel and husband Bob of Asheville; and three grandchildren, Jackie Sizemore, Fran Sizemore, and Drew Glenn survive him.

The family will receive visitors from 1 to 4 p.m. today at 606 Cokesbury Drive in the Arbor Acres Retirement Community.

The family requests that memorials may be made to Senior Services, Inc., 836 Oak St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or to Hospice Palliative Care Center, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
