Walter Carl Thumm, 92, of Alton, passed away Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at Harmony Homes Assisted Living in Durham, with his loving wife at his side.
He was born March 29, 1925, in Methuen, Massachusetts, to the late Carl G. Thumm and Elsie F. Theilling Thumm.
In 1943, Walter enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in 1946. He served as a motor machinist’s mate 1st class on landing craft in operations in North Africa and Southern France. He earned the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal with one star and the Good Conduct Medal.
On June 7, 1952, he married his beloved wife, Pauline Doris Ouellette, in Methuen, Massachusetts. Together, they celebrated more than 65 wonderful years of marriage.
He had various employment positions throughout his adult life, including his bus service in Alton for a number of years, cottage and country store business and volunteer service with the Alton Volunteer Fire Department from 1975 to 1983.
In addition to his beloved wife, Pauline, Walter is also survived by his children, Micheal Walter Thumm (Patricia Ann Harrington Thumm) of Lexington Park, Maryland, and Paula Marie Fuller (Mark J. Fuller) of Alton; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his sister, Bernice Thumm Smith.
Calling hours will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main St., Concord, immediately followed by a memorial service at 1:30 p.m. A committal service will be held at 3 p.m. at the State Veterans Cemetery, 110 DW Highway, Boscawen.
