Elenora Mahlmann Rohde
(1924 - 2017)
Elenora Myrtle Mahlmann Rohde was called to her heavenly home Saturday, August 26, 2017 in Spring, Texas, at the age of 92 years. Funeral Services for Elenora will be held at 10 AM on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at Earthman Resthaven Funeral Chapel, 13102 North Fwy, Houston, TX 77060, with Rev. Gene Johnson and Rev. Lawrence Kelm officiating. Burial will follow the service at Earthman Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 5th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Earthman Resthaven. Elenora was born December 27, 1924 in Welcome, Texas but moved to Shelby, Texas at an early age, where she attended school. She was baptized into the Christian faith at home in Welcome, TX on November 26, 1927, and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Shelby, TX on September 8, 1940. She met Alfred Rohde at a country dance and was impressed with his handsome looks and good dance moves. Alfred always said he looked forward to the dances and hoped the Mahlmann girls were there because they were so beautiful. Elenora and Alfred were married on April 7, 1946 in Welcome, Texas, after he returned from WWII. They made their home in Houston, Texas, where they raised three daughters: Bernadell Larson, Sandra Janner, and Debora Shadbolt. Elenora moved to Houston in 1941, when she was 17 and worked in a factory sewing garment pieces, where she acquired her expert seamstress' skills. During WWII she worked in a factory making land mines for the war effort. After the war, she attended beauty school, along with one of her sisters and worked as a beautician before her marriage. After taking a break to raise her girls she then went back to work at a neighborhood beauty salon. In 1985 she and Alfred accomplished one of their lifelong dreams and visited the country of their ancestors, Germany. Upon her retirement, she was able to devote her time to some of her passions: traveling, crafting, sewing, quilting, gardening, and baking for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her hand sewn quilts won several awards and she was particularly proud of one she did piecing men's ties together. Elenora and Alfred were one of the founding members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in 1949 where they were active members until Tropical Storm Allison destroyed their home and they moved to the Spring area. They then joined Trinity Klein Lutheran Church and attended church regularly. Elenora was very active in the senior activities there. Elenora was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Alfred G. Rohde, her mother and father, Hedwig and Wilhelm Mahlmann; six sisters, Elda Wittner, Anita Curry, Agnes Hauck, Henrietta Mahlmann, Willie Mae Hauck, and Olivia Smith, and one brother, William Mahlmann. She is survived by her daughters, Bernadell Rohde Larson and husband Stuart Thompson, Sandra Janner and husband Randy, and Debora Shadbolt and husband Billy; five grandchildren, Ryan Janner and wife Cheri', Matt Janner and wife Sherry, Leah Edwards and husband Keith, Dana Stephens and partner Nina Sharp, and Kari Shadbolt, along with one step grandchild, Thomas Thompson and wife Jessica. She was especially proud of her great grandchildren, Lane, Reid and Wyatt Janner, Alexis Janner, Aubree Edwards, and Jake Janner. She is also survived by her sister, Lorene Radford; two sisters-in-law, Genell Rohde and Ora Lee Levien and numerous nieces and nephews. Her pallbearers are six of her nephews: Willie Hauck, Gary Hauck, T. D. Smith, Ronald Ray Hauck, James Mahlmann, and Mark Radford. Her honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, Ryan Janner, Matt Janner, Leah Edwards, Dana Stephens, and Kari Shadbolt. They family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff and care givers of Autumn Leaves of Cypresswood for taking care of Elenora for the past year. Memorial contributions can be made in Elenora's name to Trinity Klein Lutheran Church Senior Ministries, 5201 Spring Cypress Rd, Spring, TX 77379.
