For the last eight years he had spent his winters in New Port Richey, Fla., enjoying the warm weather and golf, while living the rest of the year in the Cleveland home he owned the last 38 years.
He graduated in 1940 from Lakewood High School and joined the 105-year-old company, where he worked alongside his grandfather, father and uncle.
He served in the Army in World War II, reaching the rank of staff sergeant. He received the EAME Theater Ribbon with four stars, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with one star, the Phillipine Liberation ribbon with one star, the World War II Victory Medal and a bronze arrowhead.
After the war, he remained in the Army Reserve for more than 20 years, retiring from the reserve as a captain.
He returned to become president of the 15-employee Cleveland company. He was a member of the Rocky River lodges of the Masons and the Eastern Star.
He and his wife, Maxine, had been looking forward to celebrating their 50th anniversary next month. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy Helyes of Berea; sons, James W. of Avon, Kenneth C. of Valley City, and Thomas D. of Westlake; eight grandchildren; and a brother.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Sunset Memorial Chapel, 6265 Columbia Rd., Olmsted Township. Arrangements are by the McGorray Bros. funeral home, Lakewood.
