Obituary

Frances Pelzer Huger deSaussure PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL - Frances Pelzer Huger deSaussure died at home in Ponte Vedra Beach on Monday, May 10, 2010, in the loving company of her family. Born on November 5, 1925, in Charleston, SC, she was the widow of Major General Edward Harleston deSaussure, Jr., a daughter of the late Daniel Elliott Huger, Jr. and Frances Pelzer Huger, and a sister of the late Louisa Huger Pringle. She graduated in 1943 from Chatham Hall in Chatham, Virginia, then attended Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans and The College of Charleston, before her marriage to Ted on April 28, 1945. They travelled extensively during Ted's Army career, then settled in Flat Rock, North Carolina upon his retirement in 1972. In 1997, they moved to Ponte Vedra Beach. She was kind and loving to everyone she met, always seeking the well-being and happiness of others, and her smile will be missed by many. She saw the best in people. She loved flowers, gardening, and the outdoors, and she saw beauty everywhere. She never stopped marveling, with wonder, at the simple things in life. We loved her. Frances was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her five children and their families: Frances deS. Meade of Burke, VA, Eleanor deS. Bryan (and Kendall G. Bryan) of Jacksonville, Anita deS. Tomm (and Charles B. Tomm) of Jacksonville, Edward H. deSaussure III (and Cindy DuBrava deSaussure) of Mooresville, NC, and Margaret Laurens deSaussure of Ponte Vedra Beach; and her twelve grandchildren: Mary Meade Sampson, David Custis Meade, Jr., and Edward H. deS.Meade; Josephine deS. Bryan, Kendall Gibson Bryan, Jr., Eleanor Bryan Mathews, and Sarah Bryan Holyer; Daniel Elliott Huger Tomm; Edward H. deSaussure IV and Caroline Laurens deSaussure; and Thomas Harrison Prince and Alexander Heyward Prince; and ten great grandchildren; sisters Mary Huger deSaussure of Charleston and Elizabeth Huger Sterling of Greenville, SC; and eight nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, on May 24, at 5:00 p.m. Services will also be held at St. John in the Wilderness, Flat Rock, North Carolina on July 10, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 7020 AC Skinner Parkway, Suite 100, Jacksonville, FL 32256; Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082; or Community Hospice of NE Florida.
