Ray was raised in the Chicago area. At age 17 during the height of the Vietnam War, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to a riffle battalion and was stationed in Vietnam. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and a Purple Heart Medal for being Combat Wounded. He was honorably discharged on March 22-1970.
Ray became a heavy equipment operator and also enjoyed carpentry.
On November 23-1982 he married Charlene Marks in Casa Grande, Arizona
