Anna Margaret Simon Hessel is believed to have married Augustus J. Hessel about 1852 when she was 18 yrs old in Prussia. She told her daughter Elizabeth Hessel that she and Augustus Hessel crossed the Atlantic Ocean in an Irish sailboat and were the only Germans on the boat. Eldest child, Johannes Adam Hessel was just a baby when they crossed. He was born in September, 1855.

They bought a city lot in Harrisburg, PA which was just a little town then and built a small house. A few years later it was in the 'heart' of the town. During the Civil War everyone there was so poor that they rented land until 1868 when her husband Augustus J. Hessel returned to Europe to get some inheritance money, crossing back over the ocean on one of the largest steamships afloat. Elizabeth Hessel, in memories of her mother, stated 'she was a true Christian. She broke out her Bible and every child in that family came around the table like it was to be a meal and read the Bible.' Unfortunately she also said her father Augustus was a man who 'took everything away from his children to give to someone else' and drank up everything.

While the parents of Anna Margaret Simon were never named, she told her daughter Elizabeth Hessel that her own father lived to be nearly 100 yrs old and was never sick a day in his life and that there were 3 boys and 3 girls in her parents family and that they owned lots of land and her father fought with Napoleon's Army.

Anna Margaret Hessel had 9 children with Augustus Hessel, five boys and four girls: John Adam Hessel (1855), Frederick 'Fred' William Hessel (1858), Joseph 'Joe' Hessel (1860) Mary Johanna Hessel (1862), Margaret Hessel (1864), Elizabeth Hessel (1866), Augustus J. 'Gus' Hessel Jr (1870), Martin Hessel (1872) and Sarah Lonie Hessel (1874).

All of the above information is straight from the mouth of Elizabeth Hessel, daughter of Anna Margaret Hessel. It was in fact written down by her on a piece of paper.
