Ellen is a daughter of Scottish immigrants, William Hodge and Christina Aitken. Ellen is the youngest of nine children born to them.
Ellen married Frank Dewitt Behring in 1895, at age 27, in Pennsylvania. It is possible she had gone there to study medicine at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia. Many LDS women studied at the school in the late 1800s taking their learned profession back to the frontier in the West where it was so desperately needed to save children and mothers in childbirth.
Frank and Ellen's first child, Charles Kendrick, was born in Philadelphia in 1896. The other two children, Sarah Beckley and Frank Dewitt, Jr. were born in Salt Lake City, Utah. Frank's birth certificate shows Winifred Blanche Woodruff as his mother, but Ellen raised him.
On the 1910 Census, the family was in Freedom, Wyoming. In 1920 they were back in Salt Lake City. In 1930 Frank and Ellen were living, just the two of them, in Logan, Utah.
Ellen died of a coronary embolism. It notes on her death certificate that she had lived in Logan for 22 years and she was 80 years old.

From The Ogden Standard-Examiner (Ogden, Utah) - Monday, August 9, 1948:
Succumbs - Robert Hodge, Ogden, lost his sister, Margaret Ellen Hodge Behring, 80, when she died Saturday at her home in Logan.
