Mrs. Bertha Blome Dies in Des Moines

Death came unexpectedly to Mrs. Bertha Blome at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Sunday evening, April 7, 1963. She had been ill for several months and a hospital patient for about ten days.

Mary Bertha Blome, daughter of Samuel and Henrietta Skersies was born Dec. 7, 1881 at Bitcolnen, East Prussia, Germany. At about the age of three, she came to America with her parents and their family, settling first at Wisner, NE., and later moved to Woodlake, NE.

At about the age of 12, she moved with her parents and family to the Salt Creek neighborhood near Dallas, OR., where she grew to womanhood. Before her marriage, she worked for a time in Salem, OR.

On Mar. 16, 1910, she was united in marriage at Dallas, OR., to Carl Blome of Victor, Iowa, whom she had met previously while visiting her oldest sister, Edna, in Iowa. Five children were born to this union: Ruth, Laurence, Emerson, Norman and Richard Blome.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Blome, Apr. 11, 1925, and by her oldest son, Laurence, Apr. 5, 1930. She is survived by one daughter, Ruth Blome, and three sons: Emerson, Norman and Richard Blome, all of Des Moines; two daughters-in-law and three grandchildren.

She is also survived by five sisters: Mrs. Edna blome and Mrs. Martha Bohstedt of Victor, Mrs. Fred Muller of Altoona, Mrs. Edward Stabbert of Tacoma, WA., and Mrs. Glena Stevenson of McCoy, OR. Her brother, Otto Skersies of Eugene, OR., preceded her in death earlier this year.

After her husband's death, she remained on their farm north of Victor, Iowa, until 1946, when the family moved to Des Moines. She had been a resident of Des Moines a little more than 17 years.

Mrs. Blome was a member of the First Baptist Church in Des Moines and a former member of the Victor Baptist Church at Victor.

Funeral services were conducted at Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Apr. 9, and at the McAninch Chapel in Victor at 2 p.m. the same day. The Rev. John E. Parrott, pastor of First Baptist Church in Des Moines, brought messages of Christian comfort at both services, basing his sermon text on I Peter 1: 24, 25. He was assisted in the Victor service by the Rev. Fred Schmidt, pastor of the Victor Baptist Church.

Vocal selections were provided by Mrs. Clement Daniels and Mrs. Fred Schmidt, with Mrs. C. W. Vincent presiding at the organ. Duets sung were "All the Way My Savior Leads Me" and "Only Glory By and By."

Pallbearers were Clement Daniels, Merwyn Betz, Ted Bohstedt, Erwin Bohstedt, Roscoe Jordan and Emmet Bohstedt. Interment was made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Victor.
