Evelyn Hertel Blackmon, Mrs. Ralph Blackmon, was called home to be with her Lord on Monday, August 31, 2015, at the age of 90.

Visitation is scheduled for 5:00-6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, September 2nd, at Dannel Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held in Dannel Funeral Chapel on Thursday, September 3, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., with Dr. Mike Lawson officiating.

Interment will follow at Cedarlawn Cemetery immediately afterward.

Evelyn was born on July 2, in 1925, in Schulenburg, Texas to Charles R. Hertel and Lillie Elley Hertel.

She graduated from Flatonio High School.

On June 29, 1946, Evelyn was married to Ralph Blackmon in Kerrville, Texas. They immediately made their home in Sherman where she lived the remainder of her life.

Her career with charitable groups spans a total of 32 years. She began in 1955 with the Sherman Community Chest, a forerunner of the United Way where she served as Executive Director for United Way of Grayson County for 20 years.

During her years of employment, she was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Grayson County Social Services, and served with the Camp Fires Girls’ organization.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Sherman where she taught children in Sunday School and served on various committees.

In retirement years, she and Ralph served faithfully with the Ministry of Encouragement, serving and meeting needs of many individuals.

Until health issues prevented her from attending her beloved Mary Martha Sunday School class, she had served many years in various capacities.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ralph, her daughter, Janice and her grandson Joseph, her parents, and 6 siblings. Surviving are nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made in her memory to the Ministry of Encouragement of First Baptist Church Sherman or to the donor’s favorite charity.
