Loren Berwald, 90, Watford City, passed away Wednesday November 8, 2017 at his Watford City residence.

Loren Herman Berwald was born at Watertown, MN, the son of Oscar and Mable (Lange) Berwald on October 15, 1927 He grew up on his parent’s Dairy Farm. He was an adventurous child, spending his time hunting, and trapping in the surrounding communities. He attended parochial Lutheran grade school and graduated from Watertown High School. At the age of 18, Loren was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as a World War II Veteran.

After his discharge, he married Eileen Karels. They had four children, Carol, Keith, Robert and Pam. They bought and developed a dairy farm. It was during this time, he became involved in artificial insemination of cattle. He later sold the farm and moved to Hutchinson, MN and worked for ABS services. He served this industry for twenty years as a District Manager. The couple later divorced.

Loren met Carole Levang in 1975. Loren and Carole were united in marriage in Keene, ND on April 6, 1976. He helped Carole with the ranch operations along with Carole’s son, Dean. Loren worked on herd improvement through genetics to develop a top Angus herd. He also worked for Koch Oil driving a transport truck for 15 years. He retired in 1991 and continued to live on the ranch until 2010, when the couple moved to Watford City.

During his retirement, Loren enjoyed gardening, woodworking, hunting and being an active member in both the American Legion and First Lutheran Church in Watford City.

Loren is survived by his wife, Carole, his children; Keith (Nancy) Berwald, Bob (Mavis) Berwald, Pam (Ken) Schumann, his sister, Elaine Hoese, his step-children; Judy Norby (Gary), Cheryl Lee (Mark) and Dean Levang (Carolyn), his grandchildren; Brian Berwald, David Berwald (Nicole), Ryan Berwald (Shannon), Brent Berwald (Kati), Brandon Berwald and Lisa Valiant, his step-grandchildren; Shelley Tollefson (Glen), Wade Browning (Elaine), Shauna Underwood (Jason), Justin Norby (Nicole), Becki Lyson (Terry), Shanda Lee, Josh Lee (Callie), Shawn Levang (Mandy) and Jennifer Connolly (Shawn), 13 great grandchildren, 22 step great grandchildren and 2 step great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Carol Berwald and infant grandchildren, Nathan and Theresa Berwald and a brother-in-law, Oswald Hoese.
