LCDR McNally was assigned to VAQ-135 Squadron, CVW-15 Air Wing, USS Coral Sea, Task Force 77, 7th Fleet, US Navy.

On May 16, an EKA-3B piloted by CDR Richard Skeen, with Evaluator/Navigator LCDR McNally, and ADCS Connor on board left Cubi Point Philippine Islands to DaNang Air Base South Vietnam.

The last sighting of the aircraft was when it entered a Thunderstorm off the coast of Vietnam and no further transmissions were heard from the EKA-3B. An extensive search was made and the body of LCDR McNally among debris at the crash site was recovered by the crew from the USS Waddell.
