Caryl Wilmsen, 93, of Hecla, SD, passed away at home on November 20, 2017.

Caryl Wayne was the sixth child of nine born to Chester and Caroline (Schwarting) Wilmsen on March 3, 1924. He attended Wilmsen Country School and graduated from Hecla High School. Caryl served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. On November 15, 1947, he was united in marriage to Alice Nutten.

Caryl attended barber school and then worked as a barber in South Dakota before the couple moved to California, where he worked at Douglas Aircraft for three years. He then worked as a barber for many years before becoming employed as a salesman for Schroeder and Bogardus Steel Rule Die Company in Anaheim.

In 1988 Caryl and Alice returned to Hecla. Caryl was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he and Alice were custodians for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years Alice; their daughter, Lisa McKenna, and a brother, Garey of Pennsylvania. Caryl was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Wesley, Clinton and Ernest and four sisters, Beatrice, Patricia, Mitzi and Gayle.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hecla, SD, followed by burial at the Hecla City Cemetery.
