John's mother died shortly after arriving in American, about 1852 to 1855. John's father, John Berg, remarried on March 2, 1855 to Heinricke "Henrietta" Matz. John's step-mother had 2 children from a previous marriage to a Mr. Salley, a son Christian Salley and a daughter Henrietta. John C. Berg married his step sister, Henrietta on November 19, 1865 and had 15 children, 10 of those children lived to adulthood.
