SHINER: Irma Karnau Kubicek, age 85, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018.

She was born April 21, 1932 in Shiner to Henry and Johanna Pfetzing Karnau.

She attended Shiner Public School first through High School graduating 1948. Her first employment was with the Dental Office of Dr. Martin M. Wagner in Moulton and later joined the Office of Waldrep Cremery and Shiner Gazette before joining the First National Bank 1954. She proudly and efficiently served the bank as a dedicated employee for 44 years and retired in 1998.

She was very involved with many school and civic activities and served numerous organizations as an officer in each club. She dedicated her time to Shiner P.T.O., was a charter member of the Pilot Club, and a member of the Lavaca County Historical Commission, serving the Boy Scouts of America as Den Mother for the local troop. She accomplished the task of securing names of one hundred twenty Eagle Scouts in Shiner, which resulted in acquiring banners announcing the City as the Eagle Scout Capital of Texas. She served on the Shiner Hospital Board, Gas Light Theater, Firemen's Wives Aux, South Texas Bankers Assn. She proudly served on the City Council for six years, served as Chairman of the Committee during Centennial Celebrations' various activities. In 1991 she became associated with the Shiner Cemetery Association and served on the committee as Secretary/Treasurer for numerous years, finding much satisfaction assisting many with searching for gravesites and historical data. She was also honored by being named Hermann Sons Humanitarian.

Her cooking and baking made her Queen of the Kubicek kitchen, her recipes were many, which she shared, and always proudly stated that she learned many techniques from Oma Karnau. Her family fondly remembers homemade lemon pie, her famous canned pickles, and fried chicken. During her retired years she found great enjoyment with painting blue bonnets, which she shared with family members and friends. If there was any extra time she loved to do poetry and captured two awards with "City on the Sea" and the one dedicated to her granddaughter entitled "Katy's Friend". The history Book of Shiner "First 100 Years" included her "Tale of a "Century".

In closing, Irma's life was a life of service. She dedicated her time and talent to her community, her work, her home and most importantly her family and friends. She was a loving wife and mother, unselfish to the end.
