Richard Dale “Dick” Cappel, 76, of West Des Moines, Iowa and formerly of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Friday, January 19, 2018, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.

Dick was born May 15, 1941, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Ivan and Lavonne (Glazier) Cappel. They moved to Atlantic in 1944, where Dick was raised and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1959. He graduated from Kemper Military School in 1961 and then attended the University of Iowa. He joined his father in 1963 at Cappel Implement, and helped transition it to Cappel’s Ace Hardware, where he retired from in 2010.

He was united in marriage to Diane Hoffman on January 31, 1965, and they were the parents of Bob, Doug and Rebecca. While raising their family in Atlantic, Dick was involved at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club, serving on the board as well as President. He was a past member of Rotary, Jaycees, Elks and Pymosa Lodge. He served in the National Guard and was a member of the local draft board.  He was also a member of the First United Presbyterian Church.

Dick was a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed attending football and basketball games, first with his children, and then with his grandchildren. As he neared retirement, they relocated to West Des Moines, where they could regularly attend their grandchildren’s many events, as Maddie and Alex were a true joy in his life. He also took an active interest in the continuation of the family business in West Des Moines, and Norwalk, and enjoyed helping out whenever he could.

Dick is survived by his wife, Diane; son, Doug (Jennifer); grandchildren, Maddie and Alex; daughter-in-law, Heather; brother, Tom (Janet); sister, Carol (Fred) Emmert; many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Bob, and daughter, Rebecca.
