Ramona was a Fort Wayne native and graduate of North Side High School where she lettered in basketball. She was a life-long member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church; was proud of her early career at Bowser's, Dreibelbiss Abstract Company, and International Harvester; and her volunteer time at St. Joseph Hospital. After their wedding she embarked on her new career as a wife and mother, with many claiming her as their second-mom. Ramona was known for her unconditional love and compassion. She provided for friends in need, and was famous for her soups, cookies, fudge and homemade afghans. She enjoyed nature, gardening and loved all animals, including her many pets and everyone else's too.
Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Ladislaus "Whitey"; daughters, Susan Hanzel, Julie Hanzel and Karen Hanzel (Gopal) Pati; grandchildren, Ricki Hanzel (Michael Patino), Matt (Jessie) Nuckolls, Greg Sherman (Karen Eller) and Sara Sherman (Trey Mariner); five great-grandchildren, and many other relatives.
She was preceded in death by their infant daughter, Mary Lou Hanzel; parents, Martha (Geske) and Ernest Becher; twin sister, Leona (Becher) Hambrock; and many life-long friends.
Ramona's ashes will be laid to rest at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2018, at Lindenwood Cemetery, 2324 West Main St., Fort Wayne. The family wishes to thank all of those who loved and cared for her during her lifetime.
