Gloria Heisdorf, 85, of Elkhart Lake passed away on Tuesday morning, February 13, 2018 at the Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center.
Gloria Spielvogel Heisdorf was born on Feb. 1, 1933, the daughter of Claude and Verena Tesch Spielvogel, at Friesland, and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kohler, WI.
She attended Kohler Schools, graduating in 1951. It was there she met her husband, Jerry, while both sang in the Kohler Chorus.
On May 9, 1953 she was united in marriage to Jerome A. Heisdorf at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kohler, WI. Her husband was the love of her life and source of support. She enjoyed keeping a lovely home, and shared it with family and friends. She was the bookkeeper at Heisdorf Insurance for several years.
By God's grace, she was gifted with a fine soprano voice, which she used to the glory of God as a soloist and choir member, and choir director in Lutheran churches in the Sheboygan area. She was a member, and ultimately the director of the Lutheran Chorus of Sheboygan. She sang with the Milwaukee Lutheran Accapella Choir for ten years, singing the finest literature in Christendom.
She enjoyed improvising at the piano and harpsichord. Another joy was singing and playing to the elderly at Sunny Ridge Nursing home where she came to know and love the residents personally.
In 1962, at Valparaiso University art and music seminar, she became interested in designing and making banners for the church. As her abilities in this area were developed, she made many banners and paraments for churches and enjoyed teaching the craft to children and adults, including her beloved nieces and nephews.
She was active in women's organizations, and became a strong advocate of expanding the role of women in the church. She was a past member of the Valpo Guild and a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
In later years she wrote hundreds of hymn tunes, poetry and humorous verse. Her faith and sense of humor kept her going through every illness and loss. But above all were the blessings of her Saviour, and a devoted husband.
She and Jerry were soul mates. The traveled extensively, throughout the United States in an RV, spent some winters in Arizona, and traveled abroad as well. In 1977, they moved to Elkhart Lake where they enjoyed the view of the Kettle Moraine, the birds and geese who were always reminders of God's marvelous creation.
Gloria is survived by her husband, Jerome; her brothers, Wayne (Shirley) Spielvogel of Sheboygan and Daniel (Susan) Spielvogel of Cecil, Wisconsin; her 2 sisters Claudia (Jack) Schaller of Ocala, Florida and Mary (Jon) Fox of Dunnellon, Florida. Gloria is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relative and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Richard Spielvogel; 2 sisters Janice Spalinger and Jean Strebe.
A funeral service for Gloria will be, Friday, February 16 at Grace Lutheran Church in Elkhart Lake with Rev. Peter Peitsch, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
The Wittkopp Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Plymouth are serving the family.
