J. Gottlieb Heydlauff, (Johann Gottlieb) served in the German Army. By the time he was 20, he had completed his term of service in the German Army and had completed a very liberal education for a person of his station. He arrived in the United States on June 30, 1857 first settling in Ionia County, Michigan, where he worked on a farm for 4 years. At the out break of the Civil War he enlisted as an Union soldier. His unit was the 16 Michigan Infantry Vol., Company B, under Col. Thomas B. W. Stockton. He went to the front with his regiment, which was assigned to the Army of the Potomac, and fought in all the battles of that Company. He served his 3 year enlistment and then veteranized and continued serving until the end of war (a total of 4 years). He received an Honorable discharge on July 8, 1865, at Jeffersonville, Indiana.
He returned to his former home in Michigan and later moved to Waterloo, Jackson, Michigan, where he purchased 235 acres of land. He improved the land greatly and eventually he increased this acreage to nearly 500 acres.
On January 14, 1866, he married Katharina Maria Moeckel.
