James Newcom served in Company F. 61st Ohio Infantry and Company I. 82nd Ohio Infantry in the Civil War.

He enlisted on Dec 23, 1861 age 19 for 3 years service and was mustered into Co. F. 61st Ohio Infantry. They took part in the Battles of 2nd Bull Run, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg before being transferred to Grant's western army where they took part in the Battles of Missionary Ridge and Resaca, the fall of Atlanta and Sherman's "March to the Sea". At Goldsboro, NC they were consolidated with the 82nd Ohio and James was assigned to Co. I. 82nd Ohio. He was mustered out on April 9, 1865 on expiration of his enlistment. James's father Robert Newcom also served in Co F. 61st OH Infantry enlisting at age 44 on Dec 6, 1861. He was assigned to the Divisional Pioneers and discharged on Dec 23, 1864. James's brother Milo served in Co. A. 11th OH Infantry.

James was listed in the 1860 census of Dayton, OH age 15 residing with his father Robert a 50 year old carpenter, his mother Catherine 55, brother Marlow 22 and sister Rebecca 19, all born in Ohio.

On June 8, 1897 he received an Army Invalid Pension for his service in the Civil War and following his death his wife Mary received an Army Widows Pension.

In the 1900 census of Chicago, IL James is listed as 55 years old born in OH in May 1845 residing at 1816 Wabash Ave. with his wife Annie age 55 born in Denmark and married 12 years with no children. In the 1910 census they are listed at the same address and James is listed as a clerk in a drug store.

When he died in Chicago on May 4, 1918 his death certificate stated he was 72 years old, widowed, residing at 5524 Prairie born in OH on May 28, 1845, the son of Robert N. Newcom and Catheryn Voories and buried at Mt Olive Cemetery.
