Mr. Waid was born in Alabama on April 6, 1917, one of four children of the Rev. Finis and Bessie Jones Waid. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Having learned cooking skills in the Navy, he moved to Kansas City after the war and started working at Sydney's Restaurants, first as a dishwasher and later as a cook and he, eventually, worked in various management positions.
In. the mid-1950s he decided to go into business for himself, buying a small restaurant in Mission. With his new wife, Billie, they started the first Waid's Restaurant. Waid's grew into a chain of 15 family-style restaurants located in Kansas and Missouri. He worked hard to develop a style of restaurant oriented towards the family -- daily specials to deliver variety, pies and dinner rolls made on the premises, chicken fried in cast iron skillets, and his famous cheese soup, served every Friday. In 1969, he sold the restaurant chain with the thought of retiring. But in 1976, he came out of retirement to buy and operate Mario's in Westport, which is now owned and operated since 1996 by his son, John A. Waid. He loved to play golf and enjoyed travel.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Billie, and more recently, by his second wife, Rosalie; and two brothers, James and John. Survivors include his sister, Ruth Schust, Leawood; two sons and their wives, Robert Jr. and Joyce Waid, Princeville, Hawaii; and John and Jan Waid, Lee's Summit, Mo.; three grandchildren, Natalie Mauney and husband, Scott, Dallas, Texas; Michael Waid, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Jordan Waid and wife, Sheila, London, England; and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Lila Waid, also of London.
