"Bernice Eva (Otremba) Szudera

"Bernice Eva (Otremba) Szudera, age 90, of Beach, North Dakota, died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Dickinson, North Dakota on Wednesday, March 2, 2006.

"Bernice was born April 24, 1915, on the family farm her parents homesteaded in 1902 [sic - 1906], at Alpha, North Dakota, a daughter of Charley and Mary (Jendro) Otremba.

"Bernice married William A. Szudera of Beach on September 11, 1934 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Golva.

"Bernice was a avid gardener. She grew beautiful flowers and was skilled in making floral arrangements. She was a self-taught seamstress, making her family's clothes in the hard years. She sewed prom dresses, cheerleader outfits and bridal gowns.

"Bernice loved her grandchildren and loved to babysit them. She played a lot of games with them including bingo, Old Maid and others.

"She loved to travel with her husband. Their honeymoon was the Chicago World's Fair. They also took a trip to New Jersey and walked on the boardwalk, and touched the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. Bernice was at both the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans and visited many other places as well.

"Bernice was active in many community organizations. She was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America, St. Ann's Guild, Golden Valley Homemakers Club and a lifelong member of the Beach Garden Club. Bernice was a member of Friends of the Library, Women's Club and St. John The Baptist Catholic Church.

"Bernice worked at several different places in Beach including Golden Valley County Library, Coast-to-Coast Store, Beach Hospital and was a clerk for sixteen years at the Otis School. She was also secretary for the North Dakota School district.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; seven [sic - six] sisters, Frances Hagen, Gertrude Thomas, Mamie Scherman, Helen Sonnek, Louise Nistler and Lillian [died] at the age of seven years; one brother Carl.

"Bernice is survived by six children, Mardelle and her husband Jim Payseno of Sanger, California, Bill and his wife Pat of Havre, Montana, Kathleen and her husband Butch of Spearfish, South Dakota, Janice Sattler of Billings, Montana, Loren and his wife Raynette and Stephen and his wife Diane Szudera, both of Beach, North Dakota; eighteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
