Robert A. Ludolph, 82, a former Grant County commissioner and civic leader, died Sunday, October 14, 1990 in the Cashmere Convalescent Center following an extended illness.

He was born June 13, 1908 in Molson, to Frederick S. and Minnie Ludolph. He attended school in Oroville. As a young man he worked as a meat cutter in Chelan and Okanogan counties. He married Lucille Higginbotham in Wenatchee August 22, 1932 and moved to Yakima where he continued meat cutting.

Mr. Ludolph was associated with the family grocery business from 1935-1957. During this time he was namedthe first fire chief in Grand Coulee and also served as city councilman from 1945-57. Upon the death of his father in 1957, he was appointed to complete the term of office of Grant County Commissioner for District 1. He was subsequently reelected to five consecutive terms, retiring from office in 1975, due to ill health.

While in public office he was instrumental in obtaining the necessary funding or the Grand Coulee Community Hospital. One of his accomplishments was the development of the county road system throughout the Columbia Basin. After retiring, he served as secretary to the Grand Coulee Port District and was instrumental in securing the funds for rehabilitation of the Grand Coulee Airport. He was recognize din 1982 for his determination and hard work in this endeavor.

Mr. Ludolph was a charter member of the Grand Coulee Lions Club, where he served for many years as chairman of the Sight-Saving Program; the Grand Coulee Chamber of Commerce; the Grand Coulee Senior Citizens and the grand County Historical Society; and a member of the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, of Cashmere; two daughters, Patty Smith, Kent, and Nancy Valeson, Cashmere; a brother, Carl Ludolph, Vancouver; two sisters, Betty Call, Deer Park and Alice Score, Renton; and four grand children.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Strate Funeral Home, grand Coulee, is in charge of arrangements.
