Born in Albemarle County, Virginia, she was the only child of the late Sallie Virginia Carpenter Fray and Robert B. Fray. She grew up in the Advance Mills area and was active in the Spring Hill Baptist Church for many years. At the time of her death she had been a devoted member of Free Union Baptist Church for over 30 years.
Her beloved husband, Richard Harrison Haney, preceded her in death in 1998. She is survived by three stepdaughters and their husbands, Jan Jaeger (Gregory), Helen Lysy (Daniel) of Midlothian, Virginia, and Phyllis Haney (Joseph Makurath) of Alexandria, Virginia; two grandsons, G. Richard Jaeger of Orlando, Florida, and Christopher Lysy of Midlothian, Virginia; and one great-grandson, Dylan Jaeger.
Mrs. Haney was valedictorian of her Earlysville High School class of 1931 and was a graduate of James Madison University, formerly Harrisonburg Teachers' College, where she attained her B. S. degree with majors in Latin and English, and minors in French, History and Biology. She began her teaching career in 1935 in the Albemarle County School System, teaching at Woodridge and Greenwood Elementary schools before joining the teaching staff at the then Broadus Wood High School (later an elementary school) in Earlysville, Virginia in 1942, where she remained until her retirement in 1964.
After retirement, she continued her education in the world by traveling extensively with family and friends in the United States, Canada, countries throughout Europe, and faraway places like Australia and New Zealand. Among her memorable adventures while traveling, she kissed the Blarney Stone in Ireland, rode a camel in Egypt, visited Jerusalem and Mexico, and experienced first hand the islands of Tahiti and Fiji in the South Pacific ocean.
A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2007, at the Spring Hill Baptist Church, with Reverend Dan Carlton and Reverend Richard Dorman officiating. Interment will be at the Spring Hill Cemetery.
