He was the son of Henrich Peter "Henry" and Maria Katherina (Weber) Lorenz. He was born in Messer, Saratov, Volga, Russia, and came to the United States with his family in 1875. He was a physician and Seventh-day Adventist missionary, serving in Germany and Prague, Bohemia (now Czech Republic), before returning to the United States.
He married Isal May Keck on April 30, 1899, in Garfield, Oklahoma Territory. They were the parents of Alma Edna and Olga Katerina Lorenz.

In the little German village of Messer, nestled among the rolling steps of Russia along the banks of the River Volga lived Henry Peter Lorenz with his wife and eight children. After their conversion, these parents were blessed with two more children, a girl and a boy, named Mary and John. The mother dedicated them to God with the earnest wish that the boy should be a minister and that the girl should marry a minister, which hope the mother lived to realize.
At the age of 4 years, John P. Lorenz came with his parents to America and lived on a farm near Lehigh, Kansas, until grown. At an early age he gave his heart to God, accepted the Third Angel's Message with his parents and engaged in colporter and evangelistic work before he was 20.
He was a student of Union College in its early days and received here some of the preparation for his life's work.
At the age of 27 he was married and went to Europe as a missionary. During their four year stay in Europe, they were blessed with two little daughters, Alma born May 21, 1900, at Bremen, Germany, and Olga born Jan. 23, 1902, in Prague, Austria.
When they returned, Elder Lorenz acted as a Bible teacher in the Keene, Texas, academy for two years. He then served in the ministry in Texas, Oklahoma, and Missouri for several years.
In the year 1911 he was graduated from St. Louis College for physicians and surgeons and practiced medicine in Oklahoma for five years. During this time he never lost his interest in the truth of God and aided the local churches whenever possible. Shortly before his death, he manifested the greatest interest in his spiritual life. After a prolonged illness of about 18 months, he passed away a 8 o'clock Sunday evening, January 13, at Hastings, Nebraska, at the age of 44 years, 8 months, and 17 days.
The bereft are a wife and two daughters, four brothers and five sisters, and many other relatives. They rest in the assurance that their dear father and brother rests in the arms of Jesus, and will be reunited with his own loved ones on the morning of the Resurrection.
