Joseph Elder
Joseph D. Elder, 81, of Dallas City, Ill., died at 9:50 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 1999, at his home.
Born June 15, 1917, in St. Mary, Ky., he was the son of Benedict and Cathrine Logsdon Elder. He married Lorraine "Jinx" Heim Oct. 10, 1945, in Harpers Ferry.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He served from November 1938 until retiring as a chief petty officer on Oct. 2, 1961.
He then worked at J.I. Case Co. for several years, retiring in December 1982.
He was a member of the Dallas City American Legion Post 279, the Carthage VFW, the Fleet Reserve in St. Louis, Mo., the Dallas City Lions Club, Senior Citizens, the UAW Retirees Burlington Chapter and the Senior Citizens Bowling Association in Fort Madison. He was also a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City where he was past president of the church council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was past grand knight of the Nauvoo Council.
Mr. Elder served on the Dallas City Park Board and was Dallas City Township Trustee for 34 years. In 1975, the governor of Kentucky bestowed the title of Kentucky colonel on Mr. Elder and in 1985 he was voted Dallas City Man of the Year.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sandra Senf of Dallas City, Linda Lampe of Lockridge, and Marie Elder of Fort Madison; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Paul and Harold, both of St. Mary, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. followed by a Christian wake service.
A funeral mass for Mr. Elder will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City, with the Rev. Greg Ketcham officiating. Burial with military rites by the Carthage VFW will be in Harris Cemetery near Dallas City.
Memorials have been established for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Lomax Ambulance Service and the Lee County Hospice.
