On 1904, the same year his sister Violet age 22 dies, James is found in the Baltimore City Directory with his mother and sister: Vail, Jas E., Conductor, 1608 John St Baltimore, also E Kensett and Mrs Sadie H; page 1694 Baltimore City Dir. 1904.

James marries Emma Griffin on 29 Oct. 1911 according to a family record. They have a son, James, Jr., born in 1912 and a daughter Dorothy born 7 Jul 1918 based on her age of 18 months on the 1920 census. Emma marries (2) William A. Stephens and they have a son William Theodore Stephens. Emma dies in 1927 on the next census all three children are residing with their widowed grandmother, Adena (Leary) Griffin.
