On Thursday, May 10, 2018, Alice Eichhorst, 84, went to meet her Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ in heaven. For the past several months, Alice has been in and out of the hospital. Her health began deteriorating; she suffered a stroke and passed away peacefully at the Yorkton Regional Health Center.
Alice is survived by one sister, Margaret (Leonard) Winkler, and many nieces and nephews.
In November, 2013, Alice was predeceased by her beloved husband Gerald, with whom she shared 59 years of marriage; parents, August and Maria (Lamaquin) Huber, one infant sister Helen, older sisters, Lydia (Herman) Helmer, Hilda (George) Fauser, Helena (Emmanuel) Helmer, and brothers Berthold (Esther), Edwin and Richard (Helen).
Alice was born in Golden Prairie Saskatchewan, January 1, 1934 to August and Maria Huber. Her parents moved from the United States to the Golden Prairie area in 1912. There they bought a piece of land, built a sod house, a livestock barn and a chicken barn. Alice was the youngest of nine children. Her siblings were Helen, Lydia, Hilda, Helena, Berthold, Edwin, Margaret and Richard. When Alice was four years old, her mother passed away. Young Alice was especially dear to her sister Helena. Helena’s son, Bob, and Alice were childhood playmates.
As a young woman, Alice moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta where she worked in the Medalta Potteries Limited. While living in Medicine Hat, Alice attended Grace Baptist Church.
In the summer of 1953 the Central Baptist Church in Yorkton was hosting the North American Baptist Conference. Alice and her parents were billeted at the Rudolf Eichhorst farm. It was there that Alice and Gerald met and became acquainted. They continued to learn and to know each other by corresponding through letters. Alice and Gerald were married on October 23, 1954 at Grace Baptist Church in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Alice and Gerald took over the Eichhorst family homestead where they farmed the land together. Alice loved to work alongside Gerald as they raised cattle, geese and planted and harvested crops. Both Alice and Gerald loved their animals - particularly their dog Sparky and their many cats. Together they enjoyed attending Yorkton Terrier Hockey games as well as watching other sports on television. For the 59 years of their married life, Alice and Gerald were inseparable. They lived a quiet life and were very close to each other.
Although Alice lost the love of her life, Gerald, in 2013, she has not been alone. She has had the privilege of being a part of the Yorkton Heritage Baptist Church family. We, Alice’s family, would like to say a special thank you to Pastor Brian and Tammy Kirsch, as well as the many members of the Heritage Baptist church community. You have patiently supported Alice and helped her through the inevitable changes that life without Gerald brought. Thank you for the patience and kindness you have shown.
