PALMETTO, Fla. - John J. Shea Sr., 79, of Heights Road in Concord, died Saturday, March 8, 2008, while wintering in Florida.

He was born in Chelsea, Mass., the son of John A. Shea and Elizabeth (Belanger) Shea. John graduated from St. John's High School, Class of 1948. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1952.

After returning home from the service, John went to work at the tannery in Penacook, and after a few years he went to work for Rice Refrigeration. He later went to work as a service technician at Sears & Roebuck. In 1959, John went to work for Concord Electric Co., where he worked for 30 years before retiring in 1989.

He also held a master electrician license from 1976 to 1990.

After retirement, he enjoyed fishing and hunting with his sons and grandchildren; spending time with family and friends; and the many day trips with his wife. He especially loved his winters in Florida, which he was able to enjoy for the last 10 years of his life.

He also was a member of the New Hampshire American Legion Post 37 for 20 years and a member of the Bow Young at Heart Club since 1994.

He was predeceased by his son Vincent P. Shea; and a brother, Jerry "Shortly" Shea.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol (Kirk) Shea; two sons, John J. Shea of Northfield and Michael J. Shea of New Port Richey, Fla.; three daughters, Teresa Dugay and her husband, Richard, of Suncook, Anita Shea of New Port Richey, Fla., and Deborah Hall and her husband, James, of Bow; three brothers, Robert L. Shea and his wife, Anita, of Baltimore, Dennis Shea and his wife, Angela, of Billerica, Mass., and Francis Shea and his wife, Lorraine of West Yarmouth, Mass.; his mother, Elizabeth Shea of St. Felicite, Canada; 11 grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer LaFleur of Suncook, Alesha Watts of Clearwater, Fla., Orion and Ashley Shea of Concord, Meghan and Colby Hall of Bow, and Brandon, Dustin, Ethan and Aaron Shea of Tilton; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his constant lap companion, his little dog, Angie.

Calling hours will not be held.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Church, 72 S. Main St. in Concord.

Burial will be held in the spring at Blossom Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of New Hampshire, 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12, Bedford 03110; to the Payson Center at Concord Hospital, 250 Pleasant St., Concord 03301; or to the charity of one's choice.
