Joseph William Martin came to the United State around 1880 and went to Texas for the free land the government was giving away. He came to Louisville, Kentucky and met Anna Mary Stahlmann, they married on July 19, 1883. They returned to Texas to work the land, but went broke. They returned to Louisville, Kentucky and they’re firstborn Joseph George was born in 1887. They went back to Germany when Joseph was two years old and he was 12 years old when they return to the United States. The trips by ship took three to four week, on one of the trip Anna give birth to a boy and he died and was buried at sea. They had twelve children-8 boys and 4 girls. One small girl, Anna was killed by a coal wagon in a coal yard here in Louisville, while playing with Joseph . Her mother Anna Mary was in bed with a 4 day old child.
In January 1914 William Charles died of T.B age 24. In July of the same year Joseph hung himself. He had been very depressed and was laid off from work because of age. Also suffered asthma all of his life. He worked for the short line of the L&NRR called the LC&L. At the time of their father's death Garry was 13 and Raymond was 10 years old. His wife Anna lived with their son Garry in her old age.
