Charles C. Emde Dies;
Resident Here 49 Years

Prominent Wellmanite Passes
at Age of 76;
Funeral Held Monday

Charles C. Emde, 76, who lived on a farm a mile northeast of Wellman for 49 years, died at his home Saturday morning. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon conducted by Rev. Thomas Osborn of the Methodist Church and burial was in the Wassonville Cemetery.

Mr. Emde had lived near Wellman almost since the town's incorporation. A successful farmer, he had been a foremost figure in this community's development and had gained a large circle of friends.

Death followed a lingering illness.

Mr. Emde was the son of Charles F. and Margaret S. Emde and was born in Johnson county April 17, 1858. He was educated in Johnson county public schools and also attended school for two years in Iowa City, during which time he was employed in the Iowa City Post Office.

On February 12, 1885, Mr. Emde was married to Maria Thurman. They lived in Johnson and Washington counties and for the last 49 years on the farm near Wellman.

Mr. Emde was reared in the German Lutheran faith, but for many years had been a member of the Wellman Methodist Church.

He is survived by his widow; three sons, Evert, Morton, and Carl; and two daughter, Mrs. Bertha Gardner and Mrs. Buel Hasty. A son, Burrell, died at the age of 25. Other survivors include three brothers, Henry, William, and Chris, and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Simmons of Oklahoma and Mrs. Mary Miller of George, Iowa.
