Herman was the second oldest of five children of Carl J. Sieg and Ulricke Sieg nee "Muenchow." His siblings were Charles Martin (b. 1877), Emil Frederick Albert (b. 1884), Arthur Frederick (b. 1886) and Frieda Bertha Alvina Sieg (b. 1891).

Herman arrived with his family in the USA in 1883. He married Florence L. Snell on 19 Oct 1904 in Chicago. They had 3 children: Myrtle N. L. Sieg, Henry C. H. Sieg, and Florence J. Sieg.

Herman was a veteran of the Spanish American War. After the war, Herman worked as a railroad switchman. He died at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital after a long illness. Herman was laid to rest with full military honors at Concordia Cemetery.
